The environment inside the greenhouse stimulates growth because of the relative safety afforded to the plants. The trapped heat makes the air more humid, and this in turn causes more moisture to circulate the air, benefiting the plants. In addition, the most functional greenhouses come equipped with mechanical or computerized ventilation systems that let fresh air in and stale air out. It also lets the gases inside circulate, such as carbon dioxide and nitrogen. The greenhouse provides the safest environment for many a sensitive cash crop or potted plant.

Many greenhouses are found in countries where there is significant cold weather and winter. They are there to produce crops all year round that otherwise perish in the snow and cold winds. Inside, the greenhouse temperature can be tuned to the right and optimal temperature, just enough for the plants to survive throughout the winter. In addition, when it comes to pollination, some greenhouses allow honeybees and other pollinating insects to come through and live inside, in order to pollinate various flowering plants.

Hobby greenhouses are designed for the small garden owners who are interested in keeping it personal and homegrown. Most are commercially-made and manufactured many of them portable and takes only a fair amount of time assembling the parts. These greenhouses come in different shapes and sizes, some made entirely out of plastic, others with sturdy aluminum frames. Almost all hobby greenhouses are entirely customizable and can grow with the owners needs.
