Making Your Garden Weed Free
By Tom Selwick
Weeding can be a very frustrating endeavor for many gardeners. There are many tips to weeding that can make your weeding experience much more enjoyable.
First, you have to understand that weeds will grow back. Even if you weed an entire section of your yard, those weeds can grow back in the next few months.
There are ways to prevent the majority of weeds from growing back. The process will be hard and sometimes it will be tedious but you will be able to reap the benefits sooner rather than later.
First, you want to make sure that you do not let the weeds get to the point where they can pollinate and then pass on the ability to grow and to live. If you are able to catch the weeds before they are in the pollinating stage you will be saving yourself a lot of time.
If you allow the weeds to pollinate and then their seeds are spread all around your garden you will have a lot more weeds to pull in the future. The weeds will also be able to establish a stronger root system.
The root system of the weeds is going to be your biggest worry and your biggest problem. If you cannot get the root system to die or take it out of your garden completely you will never have a weed free garden.
The root system can also take a lot of nutrients and water away from the plants that you have planted in your garden. The weeds will eventually kill the plants that you paid for and took the time to plant.
If you are watering and fertilizing an area with weeds in it you will be enabling your weeds to flourish. It is important that you do not pamper the weeds but instead you work hard to get them out.
There are many weeds that can easily take over a whole plot. The adaptive nature of the weeds allows them to flourish in the environment that they were made for.
Often times the weeds in your garden will be much more resilient than the plants that you have planted. This can be very frustrating and very discouraging for gardeners.
If you have a small garden you may be able to weed the plot by hand. You will want to try to catch the weeds in their early stages of development.
If you are able to catch the weeds early the root system will not be developed and pulling them out will be much easier. Making sure that you get the root out as well as the top of the weed is crucial.
To ensure that you get the entire root you may want to use a small shovel. Your local garden supply store should have a wide variety of small handheld shovels for you to choose from.
If the soil that you are going to be working in is extremely dry or it is extremely hard you will want to make sure that you loosen it up before you begin to weed. This can be a hefty task if the ground is extremely hard.
For mild cases you may just have to water the garden for a few hours before you plan on weeding. In some cases you may want to water the garden all night long the night before you are planning on weeding.
It is most beneficial to get the weeds out of your plot before you begin weeding because you may have to take some drastic measures. Using a rotary tiller may be your best option if you have a large amount of land that is hard and full of weeds.
The rotary tiller will not be an easy option if you are planning on weeding between plants. It is very easy to damage the plants that you have planted if you are using a machine that turns up so much land at once.
If you are looking for a tool to remove weeds that are close to plants you are going to want to use an everyday hoe. The hoe will give you more power than you will have just using your hands but it will also enable a lot of accuracy.
Weeding is a chore that is necessary if you are looking to cultivate a healthy garden. Working hard at weeding and doing it consistently will ensure that your garden is healthy.
Gardens may be a lot of work, but the end results are very satisfying.
